Coming from Alphonse, one of the prodigious alchemists in the famed Elric brothers duo, that means a lot. She does not necessarily possess ability that most people would associate with talent and determination, but she is passionate about what she loves, and that is her talent. Sheska is a pretty relatable character for a lot of fans. So while it’s comical that Sheska’s house could be on an episode of Hoarders, FMA teaches us to admire the devotion and talent Sheska possesses.Īlphonse drives this home when he tells Sheska that even abilities like hers have a place in the world. Then, they recommend her for a position under Maes Hughes keeping records for the military. And not only are they astonished…they pay her good money for her services. When the Elric brothers run into Sheska, they’re astonished at her ability to recall what she reads. But while Fullmetal Alchemist does take good-natured jabs at the extremity of Sheska’s devotion to books (see below), FMA thinks it’s ultimately a good thing to be passionate like Sheska. Most of the time, such a singleminded obsession–especially in a woman– would become a source of ridicule. Her house is a glorified bookshelf (we cannot confirm that she sleeps on a bed of books however, our educated guesses tell us that she nods off on them enough that it doesn’t make a difference).
